History

“Childhood is a never-ending need for wonder.”

Victor Hugo

Over the past 30 years, Quebec has become a hub of intense creativity and a dynamic centre for artistic productions aimed specifically at young audiences. In theatre, literature and cinema, Quebec has produced creators whose works for children and young people have championed innovation and the emergence of new styles that have achieved international recognition.

In 1990, inspired by this movement, Rémi Boucher felt there was a need to open a window for young audiences onto the world theatre scene, and founded the Festival Les Coups de Théâtre to be an international forum for theatre for young audiences.

The first edition of Les Coups de Théâtre consisted of 12 twelve productions, half of which were international. The  festival was enthusiastically received by the artistic community, the press and the general public. Since that time, the festival has been incessantly improving and expanding: the number of productions continues to grow, conferences and workshops have been added to the program, and dance and music have become an integral part of the festival.

Over the years, such institutions as the Canadian Centre for Architecture, the Montreal Fine Arts Museum, the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York, Mexico City’s Bellas Artes Museo, and the Akademie der Kunst in Berlin have developed partnerships with Les Coups de Théâtre in order to create and present productions, installations and exhibitions.

Recognized here in Quebec and abroad, the Festival Les Coups de Théâtre has become a meeting place for artists, producers and presenters who want to make their work known on the national and international scene.

Several productions presented at the festival have obtained prestigious awards. In Quebec, Les Coups de Théâtre has received five Masque awards from the Académie québécoise du théâtre in the Best Production of the Year for Young Audiences and Best Foreign Production categories, as well as an OPUS award from the Conseil québécois de la musique for the best original production of the year for young audiences.

The Festival Les Coups de Théâtre is presented every two years. Its offices are located in Montreal at Usine C.
