Théâtre de la Pire Espèce
A single actor on stage. Around him: a table, a camera and some 100 objects and materials that he uses to build, draw and evoke cities. He humorously recounts the tortured story of a city, then describes the inhabitants of another. He looks at architecture and urban planning, then moves on to population growth. Using his camera like a crystal ball, he takes us on a voyage to the heart of contemporary urban obsessions, with every city becoming a metaphor, a symbol, an effigy and a multifaceted reflection on our relationship to others and the world.
An astonishing gallery of imaginary cities, Cities explores the symbolic and poetic value of objects using the evocative power of projected images. No classic screenplays, traditional plot lines or psychological character transformations here! This play takes on the form of a list, of a collection on two levels: first, the portrait of a city as revealed by objects, the eye of the camera and the traveller’s story, then through the compilation of those portraits like so many dialogues between the real and the imagined.
