THE 26 LETTER DANCE
Bouge de là
This interactive and multidisciplinary version of the ABCs invites young spectators to join in a unique experience by not just watching a live arts production but actively participating in the event. Between the moment that “A” launches the alphabet and “Z” takes the final bow, every letter is presented in a short, colourful tableau by four very unruly performers. Hélène Langevin’s playful, highly original production is a very contemporary production showcases a new way of creating dance works for young audiences.
Hélène Langevin’s objective was to create a choreography that would put words in the starring role. Looking for inspiration in children’s books, she unearthed all sorts of alphabet books, but the ones she liked best were those that presented each letter with corresponding pictures—but no words. Since this format obliges young readers to come up with the vocabulary that matches both the letter and the illustrations, she decided to use the same approach for her production: an alphabet dance that encourages children to guess the right words!
Founded in 2000 by choreographer Hélène Langevin, Bouge de là is entirely devoted to new dance productions for young audiences. Its contemporary dance shows, full of humour and poetry, combine different artistic disciplines, including video, theatre and shadow puppetry. The 26 Letter Dance is the company’s seventh creation.
